Assignment Six - Gestalt Laws, Design Analysis
I chose this as my good design.
And this is the bad one. Pretty obvious huh?
Assignment Five - Laptop Design

I chose Body Art as the theme for my laptop design, and specifically tattoo culture. I believe the art of tattoo is a form of body art and rarely some form of cult following. It's a messy piece of art, the one I have above but art is expressive, especially on the body. The exterior design depicts strings of color following into the silhouette's body, giving the idea that color is being injected into his veins, encircling him and making his life more expressive than before. The idea of the design is to show that the expressiveness of body art and to challenge the archaic belief that body art is "bad".
I thought I wanted to make the interior a little cuter. I injected some old school sailor tattoos as they are possibly the most recognizable ones around. The little geek guy sitting on top of the keyboard is welcoming all colors into his life, circling the strings of color around his hand and body.
Messy, yes, but I do hope the message got across.
Assignment Four - Save This/That
So, this is my very simple poster design. The thing I feel about posters is that they should be simple. After all, the primary purpose of it is to convey a message. Simple designs are surprisingly more attractive that loud, noisy ones.
It took me quite a while to come up with what to save, what to kill or what to prevent. I got so deranged I wanted to do a poster that says "Kill Hi-Five" (they are so annoying). So I came up with this design after I saw a website attempting to save as many children as possible from child pornography. Then again, I wanted something close to home. I don't doubt that there might be cases of child pornography in Singapore but to what extent, I cannot be sure. Therefore, I chose to homeless children instead.
I got this image off Gettyimages. There was no alteration except for cropping out the watermark. It took me quite some time to figure out how to properly slice the picture up into even squares and finally figured, Thank God for Rulers.
The color for the poster was deliberately played down to less warm and more desolate. Yes, I made up the texts but I thought it was essential as it was the predominant call for action. The heading and subheading had to be big and attention grabbing, as much as the image has to.
So there, simple and very balance, I thought.
Assignment Three - U C What I C
I initially had twelve pictures but took two down after some criticisms from the class. The other criticism was also that it'd be better to change the pictures into one setup - either landscape or portrait. I thought so too but then I thought some pictures were taken to be long so I didn't want to change the orientation.
The story here is that this girl, she is drinking and typing what appears to be a suicide note (Life, as I know, is over). However, the twist here is that she is actually writing the script for a play! It is pretty obvious with the handphone message. A simple story but I thought it was quite fun.
I used lots of brightness and contrast from Photoshop and I was experimenting with colors to show the mood. The stark parts are suppose to convey depression and the red parts, the brink of life. The last picture was given normal color to show that she is very much in reality and only submerging herself in the plot.
All pretty clear in the photos. :)
Assignment Two - Making Images Talk
Bummer. I can't upload my second assignment as well. I don't know why but parts of the images just don't show. Till I figure out why... (maybe i'll just snap a picture of it and put it up)
Assignment One - Me, Myself & I
This is the first final prototype for this assignment. After debating for hours I decided that the Paul Smith lines were gonna take me days to complete, that is to make it through all the letters. I settled for the curve in the L instead. At least it doesn't seem appear to look too strange. It was a last minute decision to add the stripy bar code at the end but it looks good, especially with the black on it.I did this first with Illustrator. I chose the font, French Script MT, as it resembled the Paul Smith font the most. The font size was enlarged to 120pts to accommodate the 8.5 x 7 inch space. I had to create layers in Photoshop on the white space surrounding the letter L in order to cover up the parts that went out of the font.
I can't seem to upload my other one properly but I'll put it up when I've figured out why. It says "I love Muay Thai". Muay Thai is a Thai national sport and I have drawn up almost vividly with the help of stickmen. Similar to the previous one, I used Illustrator first to draw out the stickmen and then put it to Photoshop for coloring.
